Opioids and the Injured Worker

As THE Patient Advocate Pharmacy, IWP makes it our goal to return patients to a productive life by treating more than just their injury. We work diligently to advocate for and protect the interests of the injured worker and understand the importance of keeping you informed on the issues that affect their recovery.

Recent reports published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Workers Compensation Research Institute have shed light on a rapidly growing opioid epidemic in the U.S. Largely affected by this epidemic are injured workers who are commonly prescribed opioid medication as part of their treatment plan.

IWP has developed a series of white papers to examine the various efforts made by state legislatures to combat opioid abuse within their workers' compensation systems. The first issue of the series covers the strategies adopted by Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Texas. Topics discussed include:

• Regulation and education
• Prescription monitoring programs
• Drug formulary changes
• Physician dispensing reforms
